Door and Window Sensor P2: when the iconic Aqara sensor meets Matter support.
Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 is the 2023 Q3 new magnetic open/close detection sensor with native Matter over Thread support.
About the Thread protocol
Many experts see Thread protocol as an improved version of Zigbee smart home wireless protocol, enriched with many advantages of the popular Wi-Fi protocol.
Thread has has a native IP addressability, just as Wi-Fi protocol, but has a very low energy consumption at the same time, just as Zigbee protocol. It supports mesh architecture, just as Zigbee, but can support wireless smart home networks with 200+ pcs devices, so it can be used for much larger networks than Wi-Fi (suggested for 50+ devices,) and Zigbee (suggested for 100+ devices).
It offers superior network stability and the highest security level (with AES-128, ECC support), and offers native support for Matter interoperability standard, so Thread devices are compatible with any Smart Home ecosystems supporting Matter standard.
The P2 Door and Window Sensor uses Thread protocol, not Zigbee, and is compatible with third-party Thread border routers, and by offering Matter compatibility, it has a wide compatibility with all Matter-compatible solutions. Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 not only incorporates all the advanced automation and security features Aqara is known for, but also gives users the option to connect it directly to third-party Thread border routers, regularly built-into the newest Wi-Fi routers, or smart speakers, and use all the benefits of the Matter smart home standard.
In order to be able to use this device via the Thread protocol, you need to own a “Thread border router” device. If you want to use this sensor also through the Matter standard, such a Thread border router should also be a Matter Controller.
As of July 2023, the following Thread border routers support Matter and are compatible with Aqara P2 sensor:
- Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen, 128GB), Apple TV 4K (2nd Gen), HomePod (2nd Gen), HomePod Mini
- SmartThings Hub v3, Aeotec Hub v3, SmartThings Station
- Echo (4th Gen)
- Nest Hub (2nd Gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wi-Fi Pro
- Home Assistant Yellow, Home Assistan with SkyConnect
- Aqara M3 hub
Features:
Build upon Thread Protocol: Providing robust, low-latency, and mesh-capable communication with the new Thread protocol.
Native Matter Support: Entering the Matter era, users no longer need to worry about different ecological platforms and technical protocols, and only need a Matter app and Matter-compatible Thread Border Router. This means that connections across ecosystems and platforms became simpler and easier. Matter allows the direct connection to platforms including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and more.
As one of the first sensors to support Matter natively, the Door and Window Sensor P2 connects directly to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Aqara Home in the near future through the Matter-compatible Aqara Thread border router. This will build rich and varied smart home scenarios and can work entirely on your local network.
Open/Closed Status Monitoring: Aqara P2 sensor gives you Always-on Open/Close Detection for Your Ease of Mind. Stay informed and secure with real-time notifications on your smartphone whenever the sensor detects activity. You’ll never miss a potential security threat and keep everything under control, whether you’re at home or away.
Local Home Automations: Seamless integration with smart home ecosystems of your choice without relying on cloud services. By creating automations based on open/close status of doors and windows, you may increase efficiency of temperature control of buildings, create security warnings or manage light controls.
Local and Remote Alarm: Get real-time alerts / notifications on your smartphone when the sensor is triggered, no matter where you are. Use it to monitor doors, windows, toilets, refrigerator doors, saftey boxes, bird cages, etc.
Maximize Efficiency with Voice Assistants: Using the supported voice assistants (e.g. Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa), you can receive alerts about events such as door entries, or ask about whether a door is open, keeping you on top of things at home. This keeps daily tasks running smoothly and conveniently, allowing you to make the most of your time. (To use voice assistant features, a compatibel voice assistant hub is required.)
Easy and Flexible Installation: The sensor is easy to install with its strong sticker. Also, an alternative thin magnet plate is included for flexibility. With its compact design and adhesive back, the sensor easily integrated into any interior. The upgraded stickers will not leave traces after being removed, and the additional flat magnet brings more installation flexibility.
Future-Proofing via OTA: Tamper alarm, adjustable sensitivity, programmable button… More features will be available as an OTA update in the future. (Note: the Aqara Home support for the Door and Window Sensor P2 will only be available after the launch of the Hub M3)
More features to be soon supported by the Aqara M3 hub:
- Adjustable Sensitivity: Users can fine-tune the sensitivity of the sensor within a range of 1-3 cm and adjust the sleep time based on specific scenarios.
- Programmable Button: The programmable button will trigger automations. For example, it will help you to arm an alert system when you are leaving home.
- Tamper Alarm
The Tamper Alarm feature will send immediate alerts to your smartphone if the sensor is tampered with.
